The fruiting fig

September 2, 2011

For the last few mornings, the arrival of four Great Blue Turacos to the fruiting fig, only metres from where I sit, has given the most thrilling start to my days at Wildwaters Lodge. A healthy tuft of black feathers decorates the crown of this enormous and spectacular blue turaco (an endemic African species). His [...]

Review in “The Eye” magazine

February 28, 2011

I have always loved living near vast amounts of water, whether it is near the sea, a lake or a river and if I can actually hear it, then I am at complete peace within myself. So, you can only imagine how I felt when I arrived at Wildwaters Lodge – I was overwhelmed!

From the comfort of my high-backed dining chair, I look over the white tablecloth, past the tinted blue carafe to the thousands of swallows and swifts dancing on the airwaves above the rapid which is literally metres away.

Joanna Lumley’s Nile

February 1, 2011

Otters for Christmas

December 24, 2010

There is always the thunder of the rapids, and the magical calls of our thriving populations of birds, but Bill noticed another call the one morning. Most at home in the water, our remarkable resident otters are not as small as you might think.

Nile Perch

December 24, 2010

Fishing from the deck of their room, some guests at Wildwaters Lodge recently landed three respectable Nile Perch before releasing them back in the river. Around Wildwaters, as the name implies, the river is very turbulent and this creates a safe haven for large fish. It is too dangerous for fishermen to come near with their nets, and lines get swept away in the huge rapids that surround the island.
